NOOOO is now the new "It's a trap"

For those few who chose not to watch Star Wars Episode 3, there's one scene where Darth Vader yells "NOOOOOOOOOOOO" in a very cheesy way. It's now been very very famous, rivaling it's "Trilogy Brother Ender Return of the Jedi's famous quote by Admiral Ackbar It's a Trap!!!.

Now ytmnd.com is an anagram for You the man now dog from the film Finding Forrestor. A website of the same quote basically had a picture of Sean Connery as the background, the quote above and the sound clip of the quote looped OVER AND OVER again.

ytmnd.com allows you to make your own and now Vader's NOOOOOOOOO is making the rounds. The above links is possibly the best one I heard so far.

Or even the slight in joke about a similar game Splinter Cell. This trailer is not something to be missed, especially if you like animation in general.

If anything this shows the lengths that Hideo Kojima is allowed to express his series, and trailer it...especially to poke fun at it all. Kojima has been regarded as almost a rock star in the gaming industry, just loving to fuck with the minds of gamers. As also seen the in trailer, a "director's cut" of MGS3 has been made and is going to be released under the name MGS:Sustenance. And as I told Rob before, I think he should have waited until the "director's cut" of MGS3 to come out rather than outright buying it because it will eventually come.

UNDECLARED on DVD August 16th!

Undeclared is hands down one of my favorite television series' of all time. I've seen it so many times I can recite half the episodes off by heart and even have a bootleg copy of the unaired episode. I know the order the episodes are actually *supposed* to be watched in, and generally loves it sumpin fierce.

It's austensibly Freaks & Geeks in college, and compacted into a fast paced half hour. I know that I especially, and also a great deal of my friends could identify with the lead character Steven, who is trying to get out of his geeky high school persona. Anyone reading this site may find themselves identifying with him too.

The series boasted a number of excellent and well-used guest stars at the top of their games, including Will Ferrell, Kyle (Tenacious D) Gass, Ben Stiller, Mike White (writer of and actor in Orange County, The Good Girl and School of Rock), Adam Sandler and his usual entourage, Amy (Upright Citizens Brigade, SNL, Arrested Development) Poehler, Fred (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind) Willard, and half the cast of Freaks and Geeks.

Just trust me, it doesn't get any better than this. But it comes close, as on May 24th NewsRadio seasons 1&2 are, after a year and a half delay, finally released, and June 14th marks the release of Northern Exposure season 3. The first season that's more than 8 episodes. (23!)

This is actually a little old, but I thought I'd share nonetheless. Everyone must see this movie. Here, once again, is the trailer.

"I remember enjoying the film Misery a lot when it came out. When I was watching it I was so immersed in the story that my palms were sweaty, but by the time the movie was over I felt a lack of something. Throughout the whole film there was never a moment where we could sympathize with the Kathy Bates’ character. Her Mrs. Wilkes was depicted merely as a deranged monster to avoid and run away from at all costs. That’s when I decided that one day I’d have to make a movie from the viewpoint of a character like Mrs. Wilkes."

Slacktivist on Left Behind

The first words of Left Behind are "Rayford Steele," the protagonist's name.

It sounds like a porn star's name -- and in a sense it is. The Left Behind series is dispensational porno, but it's more than that. One of the most disturbing things about this book is the way LaHaye and Jenkins portray men, women and the relationships between them.

...Our porn star hero, Rayford Steele, interacts with women just like any porn star does -- minus, of course, the sex. It's all about dominance, exploitation, titillation and the stroking of -- in this case -- egos.

The character Rayford Steele is, like the authors, no longer a young man. Younger authors might not have been compelled to give their protagonists names -- "Steele" and "Buck" -- that seem such a blatant assertion of male virility. Bev is apparently not the only LaHaye who seems oblivious to phallic imagery.

If you're thinking I'm reading too much into all this, that this theme isn't really as present in the text as I'm making it out to be, consider the opening lines:

Rayford Steele's mind was on a woman he had never touched. With his fully loaded 747 on autopilot ...

That's more than just subtext

Despite the fact that the guys behind Slacktivist makes a compelling argument against the Left Behind books, I've always been a sucker for end of the world stories. So much, in fact that I saw Left Behind the weekend that it opened. Unironically, I should.

The Act was designed to promote morality by "protecting" white women from the immoral advances of Chinese immigrants. (There are no laws protecting Chinese women but that shouldn't come as a surprise since Canada's immigration laws don't let Chinese women immigrate to Canada.)

Lee Bermejo's Joker

From his interview at Batman on film:

"The most interesting thing about the Joker for me was always the mystery that surrounded the character. He is a bit like Hannibal Lector in the sense that it isn't so important in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS to know where he came from. It's what he IS that makes the character amazing. In many respects, The Joker is a serial killer. His profile fits perfectly and I'm really hoping that Nolan and Goyer play him more as such instead of going for the over the top, comedic opportunities they approached the Joker with in the 1989 BATMAN.

Visually, I like the idea of the character being played a lot darker and more disturbing as well. It's difficult to realistically explain why the guy would have a huge grin on his face all the time. This is why I came up with the idea to actually scar his face to mirror the Joker smile. I remember seeing some police photos of the Black Dhalia and being genuinely disturbed by how her face was cut to look like a killer smile. After all, if this character was truly a crazy maniac why wouldn't he do this to himself? Add a little smeared lipstick, white face paint, and purple eye-shadow and you have yourself one demented looking dude. I also gave him some scarring around the eyes to mirror clown makeup a little more. I don't know about you, but clowns have always been a bit scary to me (the John Wayne Gacey angle doesn't help). As far as clothing, maybe push the character a little more in the Tyler Durden direction. Give him a wardrobe that could be a little over the top but not look completely fabricated and silly.

I based this drawing on Lachy Hulme, a front-runner for the Joker right now, but I think it eventually turned out looking a bit more like Vincent Gallo."

I'm not the only one who is reminded of Tanabou Asano's turn as Kakihara from Ichi the Killer?

Artist of the Day: Henry Darger

Henry Darger died in 1973 in a Catholic mission operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor. He was buried in a paupers' cemetery. He had no family or friends. The neighbors in his north Chicago apartment building remembered him as an odd, unkempt man who scavenged through garbage cans and talked to himself in numerous voices. He attended mass every day, often several times a day, but otherwise led a solitary life.

Unknown to his neighbors and to everyone, Darger had been creating and compiling a massive literary and graphic body of work since 1909. If Darger's landlord, photographer Nathan Lerner, had not sorted through the collection of scavenged debris in Darger's apartment after he moved to the mission, the writings and paintings certainly would have been lost.

Central to Darger's work is his 15,000 page, 12 volume, single-spaced, typewritten epic entitled The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, as caused by the Child Slave Rebellion. Darger exhibit curator Stephen Prokopoff summarizes the story:

The story recounts the wars between nations on an enormous and unnamed planet, of which Earth is a moon. The confict is provoked by the Glandelinians, who practice child enslavement. After hundreds of ferocious battles, the good Christian nation of Abbiennia forces the 'haughty' Glandelinians to give up their barbarous ways. The heroines of Darger's history are the seven Vivian sisters, Abbiennian princesses. They are aided in their struggles by a panoply of heroes, who are sometimes the author's alter-egos. The battles are full of vivid incident: charging armies, ominous captures, alarms and explosions, the appearances of demons and dragons.

Hundreds of watercolor paintings illustrate the Realms of the Unreal. Some are huge double-sided murals, painted on scrolls four feet high and ten feet long. Darger often employed collage or traced figures from comic strips and children's books, but his keen sense of composition and use of vivid color allowed him to create landscapes, battle scenes, portraits, and even an odalisque, of incredible intensity and beauty.

One could argue that the story of discovering Darger's work is more interesting than his art itself, but I feel that his art is a testiment to true artistry. Too often, it seems that so called "art" is created by commitee or to sell a product. No one can say that about Darger. There's also a documentry about him and his role in outsider art. I haven't seen it, but I'd love to get a copy. If anyone is interested, they can also listen to an interview by director Jessica Yu.

With every point I expressed that ran counter to a view she held, she removed one article of clothing. Soon she sat on my couch naked, gently pulling at her untrimmed pubic hair, staring intently but not quite invitingly at me. The growing hard lump in my throat was just outpaced by the one in my pants. I was a little nervous because we had agreed on the last two points—the need to reconsider the option of nuclear energy, and drilling in the Arctic—and I noticed her oversized nipples were no longer hard. Luckily, she was, by this point, determined.
‘What do you think,’ she began provocatively, ‘of the President’s plan to privatize Social Security?’
I sighed with relief; this was as sure a promise to seal the deal as her asking if I had a condom.

An interesting site in Italian which explores one of Donald's alter egos, Paperinik (aka Paperinik the diabolical avenger). Apparently he dons this costume to take revenge on those people who bother him daily such as Scrooge McDuck.

As you see above, a fan comic has been somewhat sketched putting Donald in the role of "Guts" of the Beserk anime. Regardless of it's incompleteness, seeing a evil Mickey Mouse cloaked in black seems cool enough.

For those who don't want to navigate through the site (aka if you're lazy) here's your money shot for the rest of the sketches.

20 Year Old Wins North America's Pokemon Championship

Oh, there's so much gold here. Where to start? Maybe with a quote from the champ himself?

"My heart was beating so hard when I was battling," Darling said. "I expected myself to lose three times." Yet a last-second twist of fate and a move admittedly made in "desperation" helped Darling seal the victory.

Or, better yet, from his father, who was presumably there.

Contrary to the stereotype, video games like Pokémon have helped Darling become more outgoing, said his father, David Darling. "Socially it's helped him," David Darling said. "He can walk into one of the game stores and the kids recognize him as an expert. It's helped him mature."

I shall comment no more.
